duration parameter not working-only works with the instructions item (case 20915)

Hello,
I am trying to display an essay question for 10 seconds before the Continue button appears. I have read the instructions and have set it up but it isn't working. The only way I got it to work was on the instructions item (not on essay or fill in the blank). I am not sure why. Could you please help? I uploaded the file.

A second question: Is there a way to limit how many words participants can type in a fill in the blank response? I saw you can limit it to one row but they can continue typing unfortunately.

Take a look at this thread on the Empirisoft Support forums with an example of a Custom Item type that uses html code to get a Continue button to show up after 10 seconds for an essay-type response:
