Measuring the duration of the whole experiment? (case 14947)
Dear all,
is it possible to measure the duration of the whole experiment in Media Lab? My experiment has two parts and the results of the manipulation in the second part may depend on the amount of time that participants take to complete the first part.

Hmmm. This might be possible using the responses.xls feature, but it would be helpful if you could describe in more detail each part of your experiment design? In particular:
1) Are parts 1 and parts 2 going to be in different .que or .exp files?
2) How many different .que files were going to make up Parts 1 and 2?
3) How were you hoping to find out how much time Part 1 and Part 2 took to do (i.e., show it as part of the MediaLab program)?

apologies for not being clear enough: Only the first part of my experiment is performed in Media Lab, the second consists of a deception performed by the experimenter in the classic social psychology style :) The deception consists of telling participants that they`ve took too much time performing computerized tasks on Media Lab, but the credibility of the deception might depend on how much time participants really took to complete the survey in Media Lab. The time should not be displayed to participants, but be registered in the Media Lab output. The survey has 12 .que files in each of its 7 experimental conditions.

The best and easiest option I can suggest is to use the duration parameter in your .exp file for the .que files which you would like timed. The upside is that this is very easy to do-simply use d-xxx in the parameter field of the .exp file where xxx is the number of seconds you wish to have that questionannaire timed. This will display the .que file for that amount of time before automatically ending it. You can find more information about here in the MediaLab manual: http://www.empirisoft.com/medialab/help/expparameters.htm#duration. The downside is that this displays a countdown timer at the bottom of the MediaLab screen. You said that you did not want the time displayed to the participants, but this is the most straightforward and reliable option that is built-into MediaLab.
