File not loaded completely (.csv file format)

For some reason not all of the data from the last questionnaire is being loaded into the Excel file. When I open the file the computer inform that " File not loaded completely ", and indeed, the last 6 or 7 answers are missing. This happens only to the excel file and not to the txt. The relevant excel and txt files are attached.

First, be assured that the data are there. If you can not access them then it is likely that your version of Excel is limited to reading in 255 variables. That happens to include all versions of Excel prior to version 2007. You can test this yourself by opening the .csv file in a text editor rather than in Excel. So, how do you access the remaining data if you do not have Excel 2007 or later?

Some things to try:

1. Excel v2007 (clever, no?)

2. Using the SPSS native .SAV data file that ought to be located in your byVariableName data folder. SPSS has no problem with big data files.

3. With a little effort, you can import the .csv file into SPSS like this:

Rename the file from .csv to .txt. Then, in SPSS, select:

File > New > Data

File > Open

Files of type > Tab-delimited (*.dat,*.txt)

File name <select your file>

Predefined format? No

Delimited? Yes

Variable names at top? Yes

First case = Line 2

Each line represents a case? Yes

All of the cases? Yes

Delimiter? Comma (uncheck all others)

Finish

Again, if you have any trouble reading in the data, you can always look at the data directly in any text editor. If the file is especially large and difficult to read in its raw form, try a powerful free text editor like PSPad from www.pspad.com.

When we go to look at our Excel data file, we are finding that there are not enough columns to contain all of our items/response options. The columns stop at IV in Excel. We would prefer not to have to start another experiment with the subject – we’d like it to be seamless, if possible. Do you know of a solution? We would prefer a solution that would allow it to be a seamless experience for the subject and that would allow us to easily combine the data into a single Excel and/or SPSS file. We tried using the SPSS syntax but only got the variable names to import, not the data itself.

If you don't have access to Excel v2007 - download OpenOffice 3.1.0 - this is a free open source office-like program. Their spreadsheet program handles larger matrices - I was having the same problem and this worked for me!

Thanks to shelfitz. I don't have Excel v2007, but i have the following question, what os OpenOffice 3.1.0 is running on? or it doesn't make any difference?
