"Since the spacebar is also used in MediaLab to continue with the next item" ... is there any possibility to have an alternative to the spacebar, like enter? we are planning on using a number-pad for interviewing older people, and having to go back to the spacebar on the keyboard might be confusing ... any ideas? or tricky ideas?

Hi Anja - Any solutions that could be used would be more complicated than simply tweaking a small MediaLab value. One way to approach the situation may be to remap the spacebar to the enter key. The following link explains how to do this:
