Randomly Order Responses to Scale Response Items

I would like to be able to have the response options for a scale response item presented in a random order for each participant. I have text responses that are not actually scaled, so the order does not matter. Can you point me in the right direction? I am not familiar with responses.xls files, but I've heard that this might be one way to approach this.
