Source of Key Codes?

I am reading through the DirectRT manual and did not find this answered there or here on the help forum... Where do those bizarre key codes in the table on p. 32 come from? They are not ASCII codes. Are these the raw keyboard scan codes that are sent from the hardware? Thanks.

With a few exceptions, they are the DirectX scan codes defined by Microsoft.
